Cost and Duration

The duration of the program would depend on the type of degree you go for. For instance, certificates and diplomas complete well within a year in most cases, whereas associate degrees take around 2 years. In terms of program fees, courses from community colleges are usually more affordable. Housing a multitude of community colleges that render MA programs, this state especially offers excellent opportunities at cost-effective rates.

The diploma programs in the state (from these community colleges) average around $3500-5,000. Other colleges (South Western Community College, Central Carolina Community College, etc.) would charge a little more (MA diploma costs students $7,000 approx).

Note: rates also change with in-state/out-state admissions. For instance, this same MA diploma at these colleges for out-state students would cost around $12,000 to $14,000.

Training and Certification Requirements for North Carolina Medical Assistants

MAs in NC are not bound by law to obtain a certification or any formal medical assisting training. Medical assistants do not need to be licensed to practice, and neither do they need to graduate from any specific programs. However, this is true only in theory. Please observe that most employers, in reality, do seek coveted national credentials and certifications. To secure your place in the MA job market of North Carolina, it is advisable to follow these two steps:

  • Attend and graduate from an accredited MA program: The skills that a medical assistant course teaches you are valuable, to say the least. Not only theoretical knowledge but critical practical lab skills, practicum work experiences, and clinical insights are gathered via these specialized MA training. Thus, most employers look for graduates documenting such training and the mentioned skills. Moreover, employers look for national certifications guaranteeing the reliability and capabilities of the applicant as a future medical assistant.

Note: Students can only sit for these national certification exams once they have completed an accredited MA program and graduated. Thus, make sure you pick an MA course that is accredited (preferably by the CAAHEP or ABHES). If you’re in a rush to start with a job, you may opt for short diploma/certificate options that can be completed in around a year.

  • Sit for medical assistant credential exams and pass them successfully: It would then render the much valued national certifications, as discussed above. The 2 most revered MA certifications are the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certificate by the American Medical Technologists. These credentials are regarded highly not only in NC but across the USA. Attaining the CMA certification would boost your employability immensely. The CMA exam tests your skills across clinical, general, and administrative knowledge areas. You can register at any of the Prometric centers near you for the test. However, please note that students are eligible to take the CMA or RMA exams only after graduating from a training course accredited by the CAAHEP or ABHES. Some other certifications can also be pursued by students in North Carolina. These include the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) by the National Association of Health Professionals (NAHP), and Medical Assistant (NCMA) by the National Center for Competency Testing NCCT).
